Following a Research Framework teleconference last week, it was agreed that the deadlines set for the review process in the previous meeting be extended. The new dates are as follows:

November 26th - FINAL deadline for posting the notes of the conference
December 17th - deadline for comments/contributions/thoughts - to be made via the discussion forum or directly to the Chairs
February 7th - Finished review documents on the website

Timetable

At the Research Framework Steering Group meeting on 30th September a timetable for the completion of the review of the framework was agreed. It is hoped by by October 15th the notes from the conference will be available on the website. Then over a five week period people will be able to have a final comment on the draft review document and the notes from the conference. The chairs of the themes/periods will then have from November 19th to January 10th to produce a final review document.

The Early Medieval Wales Archaeology Research Group, in association with the Department of Archaeology and Numismatics, Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales, are meeting to discuss Recent Research and Excavation in Wales this coming Saturday (March 6th).

The dayschool will run from 10.30am to 4.15pm at the Council Chamber, National Museum Cardiff, Cathays Park, Cardiff CF10 3NP. All are welcome to attend (£5 (£3 unwaged) on door to cover costs)

We are gathering information on new relevant research over the last 5 years and asking how the Framework should be amended to take account of new work/finds.

At a Research Framework Steering Group meeting on 24th September it was decided that the review of the Framework would be undertaken using the same working group structure as had been used for the original work. The minutes of this meeting are on the Research Framework website under Documents, http://www.archaeoleg.org.uk/pdf/steeringgroup24sept09.pdf

It was agreed that the original Chairs of each National working group would be approached and asked if they were still willing to carry on in this voluntary role, and if not, if they would suggest someone else to take their place. To date two Chairs have stood down, Gwilym Hughes for the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age, and approaches are currently being made about a new Chair, and Stephen Briggs for the Post Medieval 1539-1750, with David Gwyn taking up the role.
So the full list of Chairs at the moment are:

Each Chair is being encouraged to consult as widely as possible, but each is doing this in a different manner - some are using seminars as well as group work, for instance the prehistoric groups are having a seminar prior to the Bronze Age conference in Cardiff, others are having meetings of revamped working groups. If you have a point you would like to raise, please make use of the feedback forum, or contact the relevant person directly to offer your help. Draft documents will start to appear on the website during the spring and your comments on these will be very important. The conference in September will be another opportunity for you to add to the process.

When the archaeological community in Wales embarked in 2001 on the challenge of producing an archaeological research framework for the nation, I don't think any of us realised the how willing people would be to work on this. Progress so far has been achieved with a relatively small budgets but with a massive contribution of time and support from all sectors.

Throughout we have used milestones big and small to give us a focus. Seminars and conferences have provided a place for all to meet and discuss the work of the working groups. Now in 2010, we are working towards new milestones. By the end of the year we are aspiring to have undertaken a review of the research framework. The Heritage Minister of the Welsh Assembly Government announced last autumn that there would be a review and clarification of priorities for the archaeological research framework by the end of 2010.

In order to achieve this the working groups are being revived to undertake a review of the last five years of research, seeing what has been achieved, what hasn’t and what new questions that may be appearing. The results of these reviews will be available on the website in late spring and presented for discussion at a conference in Bangor in September. Final revisions will be made after the conference and the resulting documents will be available on the website in late December. It is an ambitious target, most of the work being done voluntarily, or supported by employing organisations, but the archaeological community in Wales is still proving to be enthusiastic for the task. Hopefully this website can play a part in this process. This blog will give news updates, the documents page will hold working documents as they become available and the feedback forum gives a chance for everyone to share their thoughts.
