The Wreck of the Athena

Seafaring established Wales part of the international community as early as the Bronze Age with people, language, ideas, and goods arriving from the Mediterranean and Europe's Atlantic coast.

In more recent times, with Welsh ships playing such a crucial part in the slate and coal trades, this rich maritime tradition continued with the coast providing the highway for trade with the wider world.

We are reliant on archaeology for reconstructing much of our rich maritime past, as explored in the Maritime theme of the Research Framework.
